For a sharp canvas print, aim for about 150 pixels per inch (PPI) at the size you choose. For example, a 16×24 inch canvas needs about 2400 × 3600 pixels. Canvas Rack checks every upload automatically and tells you which sizes your photo can print well.
Pixel targets by canvas size (~150 PPI)
| Canvas size | Price | Recommended pixels |
|---|---|---|
| 8×12 in | $24 | 1200 × 1800 |
| 12×18 in | $34 | 1800 × 2700 |
| 16×24 in | $49 | 2400 × 3600 |
| 20×30 in | $64 | 3000 × 4500 |
| 24×36 in | $79 | 3600 × 5400 |
Why 150 PPI and not 300?
300 DPI is a common target for small prints viewed up close. Canvas is viewed from a few feet away and has a soft woven texture, so about 150 PPI looks crisp on the wall.
Will a phone photo work?
Usually. A typical 12-megapixel phone photo prints well up to 16×24. Higher-megapixel photos can reach 20×30 or 24×36.
Common causes of low resolution
- Photos sent through messaging apps (often compressed)
- Screenshots
- Images saved from social media
- Heavy digital zoom or tight cropping
Use the original file whenever possible. For old prints, scan at 600 DPI or higher.
What if my photo is too small?
Choose a smaller canvas size, or find the original file. Canvas Rack's resolution check and 3D preview show you the right fit before you order.
